Emotional & behavioural support

A safe space to understand, cope and build resilience

Emotional and behavioural difficulties can affect a person’s confidence, relationships, learning and overall wellbeing. Therapy provides a safe and supportive space to understand these difficulties, develop coping strategies and build emotional resilience.

Support may include:

  • Anxiety, fears and excessive worry
  • Low mood, sadness and emotional withdrawal
  • Anger, frustration and emotional outbursts
  • Low self-esteem and lack of confidence
  • School refusal or difficulty attending school
  • Emotional regulation and managing strong emotions
  • Attention, impulsivity and self-regulation difficulties
  • Social difficulties and challenges forming or maintaining friendships
  • Difficulty fitting in, peer pressure or feeling different from others
  • Bullying and difficulties with belonging
  • Trauma and the emotional impact of traumatic experiences
  • Adjustment following loss, separation, family changes or other significant life events
  • Academic stress, performance anxiety and examination pressure
  • Perfectionism and fear of failure
  • The emotional impact of learning difficulties or repeated academic struggles
  • Developing coping skills, problem-solving and resilience
  • Building independence, self-awareness and confidence during adolescence
  • Stress, motivation and emotional wellbeing in young adults and students
  • Identity, relationships and navigating the transition into adulthood
Therapeutic support across development

Therapy adapted to age, developmental level and individual needs

Therapy is adapted to the age, developmental level and individual needs of each client.

Young children
May benefit from play-based therapeutic approaches, using play, stories, creative activities and structured interaction to help them express feelings, process experiences and develop emotional regulation.
Children and adolescents
May benefit from a combination of play therapy, supportive therapy, cognitive-behavioural approaches and skills-based interventions, depending on their individual needs.
Teenagers, young adults and students
May benefit from more direct psychotherapeutic approaches, focusing on emotional wellbeing, anxiety, self-esteem, relationships, identity, stress management, academic pressure, decision-making and the transition into adulthood.

Trauma support

Traumatic experiences can affect children, adolescents and adults in different ways. Therapy can provide a safe environment in which individuals can process difficult experiences, understand their emotional responses, develop coping strategies and rebuild a sense of safety, confidence and control.

The therapeutic approach is guided by the individual’s age, developmental level, circumstances and needs.

Important scope of practice

This practice provides therapeutic and psychological support for emotional, behavioural and adjustment difficulties, including the effects of traumatic experiences.

The practice does not provide forensic psychological assessments, forensic reports or expert-witness services. Where a matter requires a forensic assessment or opinion, an appropriate specialist forensic psychologist will be recommended.

Study skills & learning support · Grade 4 to tertiary students

Learning how to learn

Learning how to study effectively is a skill that develops over time. As academic demands increase, learners need more than subject knowledge — they need to understand how to learn, organise information, manage their time and prepare effectively for tests and examinations.

My study skills programme is designed to help learners become more confident, effective and independent learners, with practical strategies that can be adapted to their age, individual needs and academic demands.

The programme can address:

  • Effective study skills and learning strategies
  • Time management and planning
  • Organisation of academic work, assignments and deadlines
  • Concentration and managing distractions
  • Memory techniques and strategies for recalling information
  • Reading for understanding
  • Note-taking, summarising and identifying key information
  • Learning how to study different subjects effectively
  • Test and examination preparation
  • Managing examination stress and performance anxiety
  • Setting realistic goals and monitoring progress
  • Developing independence, self-discipline and responsibility for learning

Primary school learners

For primary school children, a parent or guardian is encouraged to participate in the sessions. The purpose is to teach parents how to support and reinforce the appropriate study skills and routines at home.

Parents learn how to:

  • Establish effective study routines
  • Help their child plan and organise schoolwork
  • Reinforce memory and learning strategies
  • Encourage concentration and manage distractions
  • Support homework and studying without doing the work for the child
  • Encourage good learning habits
  • Gradually transfer responsibility to the child

From supported learning to independent study

The aim is to build independence. As the child develops the necessary skills, confidence and self-discipline, parental involvement can gradually decrease.

The goal is not simply to help a learner prepare for the next test or complete today’s homework. It is to teach them how to learn.

From Grade 4 learners developing their first study habits, through high school and into tertiary education, the focus is on progressively developing the skills needed to manage learning independently.
